Product

ProtectaTip is a premium full-length door hinge safety protector designed to eliminate access to the dangerous hinge-side gap where door-related finger injuries occur.

ProtectaTip was created after founder Aleks experienced door-related finger injuries affecting all three of his children between approximately 8 months and 4 years of age. After years of searching for asolution and finding nothing that addressed the core hazard, ProtectaTip was developed to help prevent other children and families from experiencing the same pain.

ProtectaTip covers the hinge-side gap between the door and frame, eliminating access to the area where finger entrapment injuries occur. Once installed, ProtectaTip remains in place and provides continuousprotection every time the door opens and closes.

ProtectaTip has been engineered as a universal-fit solution designed to suit most standard doors.

ProtectaTip is supplied as a full-length 2 metre extrusion designed to provide protection from top to bottom.

Safety Research & Statistics

Australian injury data recorded 108,568 wrist and hand injury emergency department presentations and 13,511 hospitalisations among children in a single year. Australian injury surveillance also found that 70% of child door-related injuries occurred in children under five years of age, with finger jams accounting for 50% of child door-related cases.

A United States emergency department study estimated 1,392,451 child door-related injuries, averaging approximately one injury every four minutes. The most common injury mechanisms were fingers being trapped in doors and impact-related door injuries.

UK safety and surgical organisations report that approximately 30,000 children each year trap or seriously crush their fingers in doors, with more than 1,500 requiring surgery. Some injuries result in permanent damage, disfigurement and amputations.

International clinical studies found that the hinge side of a door accounted for approximately 63-64% of door crush injuries, while Australian surveillance found the hinge side was responsible for 60% of child finger-jam injuries.

Official hospital and emergency department records only capture injuries that enter formal medical systems. They do not fully capture incidents treated at home, in childcare centres, schools, GP clinics, urgent care facilities, through nurse triage services, or injuries that are never formally reported. For this reason, the true injury burden is believed to be significantly higher than published hospital statistics.

When home incidents, childcare and school incidents, GP-managed cases, nurse-triage cases and unreported injuries are considered, ProtectaTip’s injury exposure modelling estimates that the total burden of child door, hinge and finger-jam injury events in Australia may exceed 500,000 incidents per year across all severity levels. This is a high-end estimated scenario and not an official government statistic.
